My week in music…
… has been ruled by these sounds, some older, some newer but all still up there for me…

The last few weeks have kept me busy rehearsing and performing in Matthew Bourne’s production Highland Fling. Alternative, to say the least, this piece has me strutting around like a Glasgwegian slag in the first half and morphing into a shape shifting sylph in the second half. Both characters are completely different but equally fun and engrossing. The whole process has been character driven which is a rather refreshing approach in a world so often ruled by technical skill, reminding me of the visceral joy of dance that is easily forgotten. Thanks Matthew Bourne!!

You may have caught hold of this video clip doing the rounds on the internet. Her book, “Just Kids,’ is maybe in my top ten, a beautiful and poignant memoir which literally had me in tears. I love her!
“What matters is to know what you want and pursue it, and understand that it is going to be hard”
My track of the week.
This past week I had an amazing experience working with ex Forsythe dancer and now choreographer Helen Pickett. The creation process was so inspiring because Helen, very wise and perceptive, gave the dancers such profound guidance on how to produce expressive movement that was true to us as individuals and artists. I really feel grateful to have these opportunities to meet people, like Helen, that have this great ability to inspire.
Here is a short interview about a new piece she created for Dresden Semperoper Ballett last year in which some of her philosophies on life as an artist are touched on.
I only discovered Haim when Nick Grimshaw had their new single “Falling’ as his record of the week on the Radio 1 breakfast show a few weeks ago. I would safely say I’m obsessed with them now.
Apparently they are frequently compared to Fleetwood Mac. I guess I can understand why but what I like about these girls is their authenticity. They don’t sound like your average disposable pop band that are being churned out all over the shop. I’m no expert, but too me this music is high in it’s quality whilst being accessible with lyrics that you can relate too and rhythms you want to get down too. (and also music videos you really want to be in!) Get involved, you wont be disappointed.
p.s Did I mention they are sisters? What’s not to love?
Duet from one of Jiri Kylian’s most famous works, Petite Mort. Danced by Dresden Semper Oper’s dream team Natalia Sologub and Jiri Bubenicek. I’ve seen them dance this live and also watched this clip a million times, and still not enough.
